Almost a year ago it reported that a TV series adaptation of Bong Joon-ho‘s sci-fi stunner Snowpiercer was in the works with feature screenwriter and TV series showrunner Josh Friedman. Now, that project has been picked up by TNT in pilot form. The hour-long drama pilot from Tomorrow Studios and Turner’s Studio T takes inspiration from the film that took place seven years after the world had become frozen over. All that was left of humanity inhabited a massive train that circled the globe, moving ever forward through the ice and snow. Just like the feature, the TV series will deal with themes of class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival. What remains to be seen is just how well the TV version of the story tackles these themes.

In addition to Friedman, Bong Joon-ho will also be onboard the project as an executive producer alongside Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements, and the original film’s Bong Joon Ho, Park Chan-wook, Lee Tae-hun and Dooho Choi, with CJ Entertainment.

Snowpiercer has one of the most original concepts to hit the screen in the last decade, and it’s one that offers numerous opportunities for deeper exploration in a series format,” said Sarah Aubrey, executive vice president of original programming for TNT. “We look forward to expanding TNT’s relationship with Tomorrow Studios and their take on a world where humanity is pushed to the extreme.”

TNT has become a great producing partner to Tomorrow Studios and we are excited to continue our relationship with them on Snowpiercer, for which we not only have a pilot but are writing multiple scripts,” added Adelstein, CEO of Tomorrow Studios. “This is an incredibly powerful story and one for which finding the perfect home was imperative to its success.”

Snowpiercer marks TNT’s third project with Tomorrow Studios’ Adelstein and Clements.
