Disney is continuing its practice of reviving animated classics in live-action form, and one of the next projects on the docket is a Lady and the Tramp live-action remake. THR reports that The LEGO Ninjago Movie director Charlie Bean has been tapped to take the helm of the redo, which will be a live-action/animation hybrid so no need to fret about a Santa Buddies or Air Bud-type situation here.

Most curiously, though, this Lady and the Tramp remake will not be going to theaters. Instead, Disney intends to release this film directly to its streaming service that will launch in 2019. The Mouse House has been quietly shoring up content to launch on the proprietary service, recently setting Jon Favreau to spearhead a live-action Star Wars TV series and pulling in-the-can live-action films like Noelle, starring Anna Kendrick and Bill Hader, and Magic Camp from the release schedule so they can debut on the streaming service instead.

Released in 1955, Lady and the Tramp tells the love story between a pampered Cocker Spaniel named Lady and a streetwise mutt named Tramp—star-crossed lovers, if you will.

Indie filmmaker Andrew Bujalski (Computer Chess, Results) penned the script for the redo, and Brigham Taylor (The Jungle Book) is producing. Before being tasked with helming Warner Bros.’ LEGO Ninjago Movie, Bean was a mainstay in animation on shows like Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, and Tron: Uprising.

While Disney has other high-profile live-action remakes in the works like Mulan and The Lion King, those are headed to theaters where they’ll make billions of dollars. For the streaming service, it appears they’re focusing on smaller titles. In addition to Lady and the Tramp, the studio also has a live-action Sword in the Stone in the works to debut on the streaming service.

We still don’t know how this streaming service will work or where it will debut, but Disney is certainly making serious moves here.
