‘Cruella’: ‘I, Tonya’ Director in Talks to Direct the Live-Action Film With Emma Stone!!

Director Craig Gillespie is in talks to direct “Cruella” at Disney, the live-action Cruella de Vil movie starring Emma Stone, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Gillespie is making his follow-up to 2017’s Oscar-winning “I, Tonya.” He previously directed the films “Million Dollar Arm” and “The Finest Hours” for Disney.

Alex Timbers, known for his work on Broadway and Amazon’s “Mozart in the Jungle,” was previously attached to direct the film. Timbers however will next bring musical adaptations of “Moulin Rouge!” and “Beetlejuice” to Broadway.

Stone will star in what’s pegged as something of a prequel to “101 Dalmatians” as a young Cruella before she schemed to skin the black-and-white spotted puppies for her fur coat.

Jez Butterworth wrote the most recent version of the script, with a previous draft from Kelly Marcel. Marc Platt and Andrew Gunn are producing the film.

Disney executives Kristin Burr and Jessica Virtue will oversee the project for the studio.

Glenn Close previously played the black-and-white-haired Cruella in a 1996 live-action adaptation based on the 1961 animated classic and again in a sequel, “102 Dalmatians.”

Gillespie’s “I, Tonya” won an Oscar for Allison Janney and earned a nomination for Margot Robbie as figure skater Tonya Harding.
