What in the name of Alec Holland’s big green mossy head is going on over there on DC Universe’s Swamp Thing series? Reports today seemed to suggest that production in North Carolina had halted after only 10 of a planned 13 episodes, with cast member Virginia Madsen saying on Twitter, “I’m beyond sad. What a terrible decision. We have been cut to the core by those who have never set foot into the Swamp.” Hours later, a separate report noted that Swamp Thing‘s production hiatus had nothing to do with any problems with DC Universe, which suggests its an issue with the show itself. And now, a third update: Everything is fine! The Swamp is calling! The first teaser trailer for Swamp Thing revealed our first look at the title creature, who will be portrayed in his most monstrous form by Derek Mears.

This is…kind of a bad look for Swamp Thing, as the timing of the trailer is so very clearly damage control. To be clear, when I say “bad look” I don’t mean the footage itself. Swampy looks great! I dig the overall vibe of the brief teaser, and the practical monster makeup on Mears is fantastic. But it’s really, really hard to get hyped for anything out of the swamp amid the news production got shut down and not much of an explanation as to why.

The DC Comics series—which is executive-produced by James Wan (Aquaman), Gary Dauberman (The Nun), and Mark Verheiden (Ash vs. Evil Dead)—also stars Andy Bean, Crystal Reed, Jennifer Beals, Will Patton, Derek Mears, Ian Ziering, Henderson Wade, and Kevin Durand.
