‘The Valet’: Samara Weaving Joins Eugenio Derbez in for Lionsgate’s Remake!!!

Samara Weaving, who made heads explode with her breakout turn in horror hit Ready or Not, is taking a comedic turn, closing a deal to star opposite Eugenio Derbez in Lionsgate‘s English-language remake of the French film The Valet.

Richard Wong, who helmed the well-regarded road trip comedy Come as You Are, will direct.

Weaving will play a movie star who enlists a parking valet named Antonio (Derbez) to pose as her lover to cover for a relationship with a married man. As a Latinx valet, the hard-working Antonio usually moves through the world anonymously, but through the ruse, he comes to be seen as the worthy person he always has been.

The script was written by Rob Greenberg and Bob Fisher, the duo that penned Derbez’s remake of Overboard that took in $91 million worldwide.

Derbez and his producing partner Ben Odell are producing Valet through their 3Pas Studios banner.

“This character needs to be equal parts funny, empathetic and vulnerable and Samara will bring it all,” said Odell in a statement. “Her career is on a meteoric rise and we are so happy to be a part of that ascent and welcome her into the 3Pas family”

Samara is the perfect choice to play the kind of person who never moves through the world unseen — or so it would seem, because it turns out her character has all kinds of secrets that she never shows the world,” said Lionsgate‘s motion picture group president of production Erin Westerman. “She’ll be a perfect contrast for Eugenio’s character, the kind of person who all too often is ignored.” Westerman also described Wong as “a director on the rise with just the right take and comic sensibilities.”

Meredith Wieck and Aaron Edmonds are overseeing for Lionsgate.

Since breaking out with Ready or Not, Weaving last year was part of Ryan Murphy’s ensemble drama Hollywood, nabbed a role in Bill & Ted Face the Music, and shot Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, playing action heroine Scarlett in the upcoming Paramount movie based on the Hasbro property.

In addition to Come as You Are, Wong helmed Colma: The Musical, his debut feature that garnered him nominations for an Independent Spirit Award and a Gotham Award. He most recently directed multiple episodes of Dear… for Apple.

Weaving is repped by WME, Untitled Entertainment and lawyer PJ Shapiro. Wong is repped by Verve, manager Ragna Nervik, and Hansen, Jacobson.
