‘Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms’: ‘Mortal Kombat Legends’ Animated Sequel Announced!!

A follow-up to last year’s ultra-violent animated film Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge is coming out very soon.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel, titled Battle of the Realms, will feature most of Scorpion’s Revenge‘s voice cast, including Joel McHale, Jennifer Carpenter and Jordan Rodrigues as Earthrealm warriors Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade and Liu Kang. Other returning actors include Patrick Seitz (Scorpion), Artt Butler (Shang Tsung/Cyrax), Robin Atkin Downes (Shinnok/Reiko), Dave B. Mitchell (Lord Raiden/Kintaro/Sektor), Ikè Amadi (Jax Briggs) Grey Griffin (Kitana/Mileena) and Fred Tatasciore (Shao Kahn), though details about their arcs in the film currently remain unknown.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms will also expand its character roster with fighters who have yet to appear in this incarnation of the franchise. Alongside Bayardo De Murguia as the second Sub-Zero Kuai Liang, younger brother of Scorpion’s Revenge‘s Bi-Han, the new cast features Stryker and Smoke (both voiced by Matthew Mercer), Kung Lao (Matt Yang King), Jade (Emily O’Brien), the Kytinn D’Vorah (Debra Wilson) and the Lin Kuei Grandmaster (Paul Nakauchi).

Battle of the Realms‘ announcement comes months after the live-action Mortal Kombat reboot’s HBO Max debut, which featured an original protagonist in Lewis Tam‘s Cole Young but, in its closing moments, teased the future appearance of Johnny Cage. The animated sequel, by comparison, will presumably follow the aftermath of Scorpion’s Revenge, in which Scorpion killed Quan Chi for the murder of his family while Johnny, Sonya, Liu Kang, Jax and Raiden escaped Shang Tsung’s Island after winning the Mortal Kombat tournament. There, Raiden revealed to Liu Kang that it was his destiny to “defeat Shao Khan,” the ruler of Outworld. After torturing Shang Tsung for his failure, Shao Khan ordered his forces to begin an invasion of Earthrealm, vowing to “end this game, once and for all.”

Directed by Ethan Spaulding and based on a screenplay by Jeremy AdamsMortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms will release in summer 2021.
