‘Harry Potter’: HBO Boss Confirms Voldemort Hasn’t Been Cast Yet for the Series!!

The first trailer for HBO’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone finally gave fans a real look at the new Wizarding World, but it also left one major question hanging in the air. While the teaser introduced the tone, the young leads, and several key Hogwarts faces, it stopped well short of showing anything tied to Lord Voldemort. Now HBO boss Casey Bloys has weighed in, and his answer is a pretty big update in itself: Voldemort has not been cast yet.

Speaking while promoting HBO Max’s UK launch, Bloys was asked about the Dark Lord and made it clear there is nothing official there yet. “No, we have not,” he said when asked whether Voldemort had been cast. He also shut down the rumor mill more broadly, adding, “As a rule, I would say any rumors – don’t [believe them]. I don’t even know who we’re casting. I really don’t! I would take everything you read with a grain of salt.”

That is interesting timing, because speculation has been building for a while over whether HBO would lock in its Voldemort actor early. Even though the character does not properly appear in full form until much later in the saga, Philosopher’s Stone still includes Professor Quirrell’s connection to him, and Chamber of Secrets introduces Tom Riddle in a much more direct way. So from a long-term adaptation standpoint, it would have made sense for HBO to already know who it wants. But if Bloys is being taken at face value, that process is either still ongoing or simply not as advanced as fans assumed.

Who Stars In ‘Harry Potter’?

The trailer itself confirmed a Christmas 2026 launch for the first season and introduced the core cast, including Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid. The supporting lineup also includes Luke Thallon as Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Filch, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Leigh Gill as Griphook, and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander. The series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes and executive producing.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will premiere on HBO at Christmas 2026.
