‘Dark Matter’ Season 2: First Images Tease the Return of Apple TV’s Acclaimed Sci-Fi Adaptation!! Check It Out!!!

Apple TV has developed quite a reputation when it comes to sci-fi TV shows. For a few years, the most popular sci-fi show on Apple TV was Severance (starring Adam Scott), but it lost this title last year, thanks to the premiere of Pluribus, the hit series starring Rhea Seehorn that was written by Vince Gilligan (creator of Breaking Bad). New seasons of both Severance and Pluribus are both on the way, though it may be a while before they arrive. It’s already been a big year for Apple TV in the sci-fi department, thanks to the premiere of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2. The show stars Wyatt Russell and Kurt Russell as younger and older versions of the same character, and it directly connects to the MonsterVerse movie franchise.

Dark Matter is based on the critically acclaimed sci-fi novel of the same name, penned by Blake Crouch. The series stars Joel Edgerton as Jason Dessen, a man who is kidnapped on his way home from the bar one night, only to wake up in a world he no longer recognizes. Jennifer Connelly also stars in the sci-fi show as Daniela, Jason’s wife, who proves to be a vital part of getting him back home. The first season of Dark Matter was a smash hit for Apple TV, and although it adapted the entirety of Crouch’s novel, the show was renewed for a second season. Dark Matter Season 2 will take the story into uncharted territory, but with Crouch still at the helm as the lead writer and showrunner, fans can rest easy knowing the story is moving forward with his full approval. This afternoon, Apple TV announced that Dark Matter Season 2 will premiere on August 28.

What Is ‘Dark Matter’ Season 2 About?

In addition to announcing the premiere date for Dark Matter Season 2, Apple TV has also released an official synopsis for the show’s sophomore season, which reads as follows:

“The Dessens are building a quiet life in a seemingly safe world when the unimaginable happens, and they’re forced to leave. As Jason’s obsession with the Box builds, Daniela’s paranoia pushes her over the edge. Meanwhile, Amanda and Ryan start working together to get home, and Leighton pursues his grand dream of building a perfect world.”

It sounds like Dark Matter will continue the series trend of multiversal adventures, but in Season 2, fans will no longer have any source material to compare to what’s happening on the small screen. The fate of the show beyond Season 2 has yet to be decided and will likely depend on viewership and reception. Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi and Oakes Fegley will all return to star, with Blake Crouch, Jacque Ben-Zekry, and Matt Tolmach producing.
