Alien has become one of the biggest and most successful sci-fi franchises in the world, and it all dates back to Ridley Scott’s original work in the 1979 sci-fi epic. Alien continues to inspire a new generation of sci-fi horror movies, but the franchise has managed to stick around this long due to its ability to evolve. Ridley Scott passed on directing the long-awaited sequel to Alien, which was released in 1986, but he made the right call in helping to select James Cameron to direct Aliens. Things took a bit of a turn in the 90s when David Fincher took directorial control of the Alien franchise and released Alien 3, which was panned by critics and audiences alike. The assembly cut of Alien 3, which is over 30 minutes longer than the original, premiered on HBO Max earlier this week.
The Alien franchise finally expanded into TV last year with the release of Alien: Earth, the sci-fi show developed by Noah Hawley (writer of Fargo). Scott was, of course, involved as an executive producer on the project, but he did not write or direct any episodes of the show, which stars Sydney Chandler as Wendy, Alex Lawther as Joe, Essie Davis as Dame Sylvia, Samuel Blenkin as Boy Kavalier, Babou Ceesay as Morrow, Adarsh Gourav as Slightly, and more. It took some time, but Hulu finally decided to renew Alien: Earth for Season 2 last November, and reports indicate that production is due to start any day now. Before cameras officially roll on the hit sci-fi series, though, news broke this afternoon that Peter Dinklage, famed for his performance as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones, has officially joined the cast of Alien: Earth Season 2 as a series regular.
What Is ‘Alien: Earth’ About?
The official synopsis for Alien: Earth reads as follows:
“When a mysterious space vessel crash-lands on Earth, a young woman and a ragtag group of tactical soldiers make a fateful discovery that puts them face-to-face with the planet’s greatest threat.”
Plot details about Alien: Earth Season 2, including who Peter Dinklage is playing, are being kept under wraps for now. Dinklage recently played the main villain, Leon Prater, in the debut season of Dexter: Resurrection, and he could yet be in line for another villainous role in FX’s hit sci-fi series.
