Cinemax & Justin Lin Developing a Bruce Lee-Inspired Drama Series ‘WARRIOR’!!

brucelee1Filmmaker Justin Lin was one of the driving forces behind turning the Fast & Furious franchise into one of the most popular film series of all time by helming installments 3-5, and now it appears he’s keen on expanding his reach into the TV realm. Lin is the director HBO settled on to helm the first two episodes of True Detective Season 2, crafting the visual look of the anthology series’ second season, and now he’s developing a TV show of his own at Cinemax.

As per Deadline, the HBO sister network and Lin are developing the drama series Warrior, which is inspired by the writings of martial arts legend Bruce Lee. Lin is attached to direct the potential pilot, which was written by Jonathan Tropper, the co-creator/writer of Cinemax’s other hit original series Banshee. Should Cinemax order it to series, Tropper would act as executive producer alongside Lin.

Described as a crime drama, Warrior “traces the path of a gifted but morally corrupt fighter thrown into crisis after a lifelong quest for vengeance is undermines.” This was a passion project of Lee’s for some time, and his daughter Shannon Lee found his extensive handwritten notes on the series after his death.

Lin is currently busy in pre-production on the Paramount Pictures film Star Trek Beyond, taking over the director’s chair after Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness helmer J.J. Abrams departed the franchise for Star Wars. Despite the fact that he’s gearing up to tackle his biggest film yet, it’s clear from today’s news that Lin is still keen on telling smaller-scale stories as well.
