Synopsis – A man (Kapil Sharma) falls in love with four women, but how will he keep them from finding out about each other?
My Take – Due to the unprecedented success of his TV show ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil‘ & his very successful stint in Comedy Circus, it was inevitable stand-up comedian, actor, TV host, producer and singer Kapil Sharma would move on the big screen some day. While most TV actors have been unsuccessful in the transition, their are some who done big for themselves, for example Shah Rukh Khan started his career by playing supporting roles in soap operas. While, Kapil from no angle looks like a conventional hero we are used to seeing or rooting for, let alone him being paired with four beautiful actress! Luckily for him, he succeeds to a degree thanks to the directors at helm – the brotherly duo in white Abbas Mustan (they are weirdly always dressed in white). While Abbas Mustan have made a career for themselves specializing in inspired yet entertaining thrillers such as Baazigar, Humraaz, Ajnabee, the Race films along with many others, the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Badshaah (1999) may be the closest they have come to a comedy, yet they seem completely at home for this ‘leave your brains at home’ type of comedy film! As expected, the film is completely logic less, but if you have been a fan of the Govinda – David Dhawan type of comedies of the 90s, you would lap this film, because its almost as ape as those films. The film is well paced enough to keep you engaged in the histrionics whether you find them funny or not. If your looking for something else in this film you should stand clear because there is nothing novel or new age here. The story follows Kumar Shiv Ram Kishan (Kapil Sharma), a man troubled by the ill fate of three forced marriages.
His first marriage to Juhi (Manjari Fadnis) was a result of Juhi’s dying father’s last wish. While his second to Simran (Simran Kaur Mundi) was a result of his friend conning the bride’s family of 50 lakhs by showing his picture, & the moment he clarifies the con to her, she threatens him of committing suicide. He ends up marrying Anjali (Sai Lokur), his third marriage when her boyfriend dupes her after he finds out she is the sister of the deaf gangster Tiger Bhai (Arbaaz Khan), as expected she also attempts suicide, but he saves her, and by then her Don brother shows up & forces Shiv Ram Kisan to marry his sister. On top of that Shiv has a girlfriend Deepika (Elli Avaram), a professional dancer, and his actual love. The rest of the film is about how Shiv tries to hide his wives from each other, with the help of his lawyer friend Karan (Varun Sharma) and how his life turns upside down after he moves all three wives to one apartment complex, living just a couple of floors above each other. Though the basic story of the film is not new to us, well Govinda has starred in two films with the similiar themes – Saajan Chale Sasural & the very under rated Sandwich, there is a lot happening in the film thanks to truckload of characters. The biggest merit of film lies in the fact that it keeps you entertained. Sure, it might seem a little over the top and at times juvenile, but the film thankfully doesn’t bore you, which is a huge plus point. There are enough characters and loads of situational comedy that will help you overlook the story’s lack of novelty. While the comedy is good and the makers have kept the proceedings entertaining, the film is far from perfect. One major flaws of the film is the complete lack of logic from start to finish. How can anyone married to three women, living in the same building, manage to escape for so long without being caught? And how can these wives be so dumb that even after becoming friends with each other, they never come to know the truth about their husbands (or rather husband)? Doesn’t his lawyer friend Varun not know that polygamy is illegal in India? At the start of the film, where it is shown how Kapil gets married thrice, the proceedings are unfunny and juvenile! It felt like the makers are questioning the intelligence of the audience. The climax of the film is so laughable and dumb that you can’t help but feel that the makers are actually glorifying polygamy. After Kapil calls his three marriages as “hadsa” and convinces that his wives, his parents and the society that he is innocent, by delivering an utterly convincing speech, Eli Evram says this,” Jis aadmi ne hadso se pyaar kiya, us aadmi ke pyaar ko me ek hadsa nahi hone doongi.” LOL! Kapil Sharma stands out in his debut flick, playing the part of a man who, day in day out, lives in the tension of managing three wives.
His nervous comic timing and his ability to make a serious situation hilarious benefits the film hugely. While you secretly pity at Kapil’s state, one just can’t help but chuckle at his plight. Kapil even shines in the dramatic scenes and shows great promise as an actor. Sharma displays a surprising flair for underplaying. He is clearly building on his TV comic persona, but manages to employ more than the standard smirk, which seems to be his only expression on his show, to make his point, and there are places he delivers his lines with smart timing. He nearly makes you believe that under all that creepiness, there is a solid, middle-class helplessness to his Shiv Ram Kishan. Even though at times its hard for me to digest that Kapil Sharma who looks extremely below average has three beautiful wives and a hot girlfriend, I mean when Govinda did this in films it had some grace, but Kapil needs to lose some weight or get a new look or something. Varun Sharma does justice to his role of Kapil’s cheeky lawyer friend, who gets him out of troubles. His jokes about science and Newton’s laws infuses laughter. Even though he is playing a stereotypical role of a deaf person of Bollywood standards, Arbaaz Khan’s antics and his dialogues are entertaining. Scenes like Kapil’s attempts to hide from the prying eyes of Eli’s father in a mall, where all his three wives are out for shopping are hilarious and outstanding. The gorgeous ladies – Elli Avaram, Manjari Fadnis, Simran Kaur Mundi & debutante Sai Lokur play their parts well. Supriya Pathak is like able. On the whole, ‘Kis Kisko Pyar Karoon‘, is a hilarious as well as an outlandish blast from the past, a comedy of errors that is reminiscent of the 90s. Overall if your a fan of David Dhawan film, Kapil Sharma and his show this film is a must watch for you, but in case you are not a fan of crazy mindless films avoid it! Even though the film doesn’t really have nothing new but its still a very enjoyable watch.
