You might not have seen or heard it coming, but just like that monster in the original movie, another Cloverfield film is coming for you. A mysterious teaser trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane played before screenings of 13 Hours today, prompting fans to speculate that 2008’s mysteriously-marketed monster flick might be getting its long-rumored sequel. For once, fan speculation is on the mark. J.J. Abrams, who produced the first film, confirmed the news to Collider in a statement: “We wanted to make [10 Cloverfield Lane] a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”
10 Cloverfield Lane is directed by Dan Trachtenberg and stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher, Jr. According to the trailer, Damien Chazelle (Whiplash) also lent a hand on the script. The project, from Abrams‘s production company Bad Robot, was originally referred to as “post-apocalyptic thriller” called Valencia, about a girl (Winstead) John Goodman had locked in a basement. How does that relate to a monster attack? No idea! 10 Cloverfield Lane hits theaters March 11.
