Rob Letterman’s Goosebumps was one of those films I probably would have absolutely loved as a kid. Not only did I get to see an age-appropriate adaptation of the bestselling series of horror novels by R.L Stine, I also got a truly spooky story with heart and laughter. Our own Matt Goldberg called it an “absolute delight”, and I’d probably put it on the same shelf of scary cinema as the live-action Casper film and Disney’s Hocus Pocus. Even though it didn’t blow up the box office last fall, the performance was solid enough in theaters and on home video that the studio is looking ahead towards a second installment just the same.
As THR reports, Sony is in the process of closing deals with Letterman and writer Darren Lemke to return for another round of thrills and chills. There’s no word on whether or not Jack Black will return as Stine, but that’s certainly the plan. It’s unclear at this point whether Dylan Minnette’s Zach and Odeya Rush’s Hannah would return for the sequel, though it would make sense to keep the already-introduced team intact. Producers Deborah Forte and Neal H. Moritz will also return.
Currently, there’s no information as to what the plot of a Goosebumps sequel would be, but I’m curious about it to say the least. There were a lot of stories referenced in the 2015 film but few of Stine’s most famous characters got an in-depth treatment since the movie opted for a very loose adaptation of Stine’s career and imagined him as a writer haunted by literal manifestations of his creations. Perhaps a sequel would be a more direct adaptation of some of Stine’s work, but I’d personally like to see a similar plan of attack, referencing Goosebumps lore within the structure of an original story.
