Last night, before a decidedly wheel-spinning episode of Game of Thrones, HBO unveiled the lengthiest trailer yet for the upcoming limited series The Night Of. Created by Oscar-winning Schindler’s List screenwriter Steven Zaillian and The Wire alum Richard Price, the show revolves around a complex New York City murder case, examining the police investigation, legal proceedings, and criminal justice system in intricate detail. Indeed, it’s based on the BBC series Criminal Justice created by Peter Moffat.

Nightcrawler standout Riz Ahmed stars as the accused here, with John Turturro looking to play his lawyer. Previously titled Criminal Justice, this project has actually been the works for some time at HBO and was a passion project of James Gandolfini’s before his untimely passing. The Sopranos actor was set to make his HBO return in the role that Turturro ended up playing, and it’s not hard to see the appeal in this latest trailer.

If you’re getting a strong True Detective vibe, that’s no accident—particularly since the future of True Detective is very much in limbo. This looks very much to be in the vein of that limited series, with Zaillian and Price writing all eight episodes and Zaillian directing. The subject matter is rich—blending the kind of intricate murder story that works so well on television with a deep dive into the criminal justice system—and the casting is on point, so this could end up being one of the summer’s breakout hits.

Take a look at the new trailer below along with some images. The Night Of premieres on Sunday, July 10th at 10pm ET/PT with a 90-minute premiere, followed by seven more hourlong episodes.
