In a bit of an interesting turn today, it looks like Paramount may have found a pair of directors for its planned-but-currently-unscheduled Beverly Hills Cop 4. The film had previously been set to debut in March of this year before it was pulled from the studio’s calendar just a little over a year ago. Brett Ratner had been attached to direct, but apparently that arrangement has fallen through. Eddie Murphy and producer Jerry Bruckheimer appear to have found his replacement, though it’ll take a duo to do the job.

Deadline reports that TIFF 2015 award-winning directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will be at the helm for Beverly Hills Cop 4, which will see Murphy return to the role of Axel Foley. El Arbi and Fallah are known for their crime drama Black, which won TIFF’s Discovery Award last year. Murphy and Bruckheimer were so impressed with their work that they set up a meeting with the pair of Belgian writer-directors where they were surprised to find that the Beverly Hills Cop films were personally important to them as filmmakers.

I’m not familiar with Black, or El Arbi and Fallah, but this seems like a win/win: it’s an opportunity for the newcomers to play with a bigger budget and with much more exposure, while their involvement could reinvigorate a relatively old franchise for the studio. As far as we know, the Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec script is still intact, though as of January of last year, the creative team was still trying to get it right. Murphy has already said that he won’t be doing the film “unless they have a really incredible script.” If it all comes together, then Foley fans should see the street-smart cop get back to his Detroit origins when the next installment hits theaters.
