‘Divorce’ Trailer: Sarah Jessica Parker Hits a Rough Patch in HBO Comedy!! Check It Out!!

Sarah Jessica Parker is reassessing her life. I don’t mean in terms of her career, though she hasn’t had anything remotely headline-grabbing since her brief stint on Glee. I don’t mean her personal life, either. The actress stars in a new HBO original series called Divorce, which just released a new trailer highlighting SJP as Frances and her tumultuous relationship with her mustachioed husband.

Sharon Horgan, who co-writers and stars in the fantastic Amazon original series Catastrophe, penned the pilot episode for Divorce, which also touts longtime Girls helmer Jesse Peretz. (He directed the great Shoshanna-centric Season 5 episode “Japan,” as well as Hannah’s “Queen for Two Days” episode at the female empowerment retreat). Thomas Haden Church plays SJP’s on-screen husband at the center of the eponymous divorce, while the cast is rounded out by Molly ShannonTalia BalsamTracy LettsSterling Jerins, and Charlie Kilgore.

HBO is beginning steps towards recovery after the hard times in the age of Vinyl, which ended its first season in April and was recently cancelled. A lot of money was sunk into the project, including to pay Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger, though the viewer return, especially towards the beginning, was not enough compensation. Add that to the fact that the network couldn’t yet bare the fruits of Westworld, which was pushed even farther back due to rewrites. However, this past Sunday’s Game of Thrones brought with it the first trailer, and hype is building up again for HBO’s drama slate.

Still, its comedies have been doing very well, from another excellent season of Veep to sharp satire from Silicon Valley, and now the return of Curb Your EnthusiasmDivorce‘s trailer may not betray much about the project yet, but given Horgan’s work on Catastrophe and HBO’s recent track record with its half-hour series, it’s something to look forward to.

The series is scheduled to bow sometime this fall. Here’s the official synopsis:

The half-hour comedy series DIVORCE (ten episodes) stars Sarah Jessica Parker, who also serves as an executive producer, as Frances, a woman who suddenly begins to reassess her life and her marriage, and finds that making a clean break and a fresh start is harder than she thought.
