The marketing for Suicide Squad continues to be leagues different than the direction Warner Bros. took for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and it’s marking a refreshing change of pace. Case in point: a series of character videos have been unveiled that offer a closer look at each main character, including stats and info, but it’s all done in a colorful and cheeky manner so as to not take these villains too seriously. Indeed, while writer/director David Ayer is known for gritty and grounded films like Fury and End of Watch, this DC Comics adaptation appears to be his most dynamic film yet—albeit his penchant for character drama permeates throughout, and it’s one of the reasons he was chosen to direct this film in the first place.
There looks to be a few bits of new footage scattered throughout the montages at the end of each of these videos, and I continue to be mighty excited about this movie. The cast—which includes Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jay Hernandez, Karen Fukuhara, Adam Beach, and Viola Davis—is wonderfully diverse, and I’m eager to see how this very different group of individuals comes together to work as a team.
Here’s the official synopsis for Suicide Squad:
From director David Ayer comes “Suicide Squad,” starring Oscar nominee Will Smith, Oscar winner Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman and Oscar nominee Viola Davis. It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super-Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
