There’s a Netflix series in the works about female wrestlers in the 1980s, and the streaming service has found its top lady to wrangle the cast. Alison Brie, who hasn’t really had a series regular role on a series since Community, already has a relationship with Netflix with her voice role on BoJack Horseman, and now she’s getting back in the ring (so to speak) with G.L.O.W.

The 10-episode series, an acronym for Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, takes place in Los Angeles during the Reagan era and “will showcase big hair and body slams,” according to Deadline. The story is based on a real syndicated series about a female wrestling league of the time, though it’s a fictionalized concept centered around an out-of-work actress named Ruth (Brie), who finds her one last attempt to fulfill her dreams: a weekly series about female wrestlers.

Since the end of Community, Brie has been keeping busy with big-screen roles in films like How to Be Single and Sleeping With Other People, all while maintaining her comedic chops. G.L.O.W. was created by Homeland’s Liz Flahive and Orange Is the New Black’s Carly Mensch, OITNB creator Jenji Kohan is on board as an executive producer.

It’s hard to get a gauge on where these creatives will take us. With Brie in the lead, I’m guessing it’ll be more comedic than anything, though OITNB is technically a comedy if you ask the Emmys. These producers and showrunners proved to us and Netflix that they can drum up viewers, while also creating a thought-provoking, character-driven show.
