Back when it was announced that Sony Pictures Animation would be bringing a big-screen adaptation of the Angry Birds mobile game to theaters, the decision left a lot of people scratching their heads. Now that The Angry Birds Movie has tallied up a hefty global box office sum of nearly $350 million however, that decision is proving out. So now that the animation studio is dipping into mobile game territory once again with plans for a Fruit Ninja adaptation, the tendency to laugh and shake our heads is still strong, but we could be the ones with cantaloupe on our faces in a few years’ time.

As THR reports, Sony Pictures Animation’s J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani, (How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack) are writing the script with Tripp Vinson producing. The major news is that New Line “has landed the film rights to the addictive mobile game app that has become a staple on phones and tablets.” That deal reunites Vinson and New Line, a partnership which has found success on the Journey to the Center of the Earth films and the natural disaster/action hit San Andreas.

The script for Fruit Ninja is said to be a family comedy which centers on “a team of misfits who are recruited to become Fruit Ninjas in order to save the world.” Pretty basic stuff to start out with but I’m sure more details will emerge the further we get through production. The Angry Birds Movie came up with a surprisingly (and unnecessarily) complex and convoluted plot that sprang from a game in which angry birds launched themselves at greedy pigs. So now that they’re starting with ninjas who slice fruit in half for points, the sky’s the limit I guess?

Halfbrick Studios’ Fruit Ninja is the second-highest-selling iOS game of all time, with over 1 billion downloads.
