‘Suicide Squad’ Extended Cut Coming to Blu-ray and Digital HD!!

If you watched Suicide Squad and thought to yourself, “Give me more of this,” you’re in luck. Just as they did with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros. will be releasing an extended cut of writer/director David Ayer’s Suicide Squad on home video, giving fans the opportunity to see even more of the villain team’s violent hijinks. Indeed, fans can watch this extended cut—with 13 minutes of new footage—on Digital HD as early as November 15th, while the film hits Blu-ray on December 13th.

The Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, and Blu-ray Combo Pack will all include both the theatrical cut and the extended version of Suicide Squad, and the extended version will be available to own on Digital HD.

It’s unclear exactly what will be on this extended cut, but a trailer for the release teases some previously unseen footage, and earlier this year Ayer teased that there are over 10 minutes worth of deleted scenes while stressing that the theatrical cut is, for all intents and purposes, his director’s cut:

“We have a chunk, there’s definitely over 10 minutes of material on there. But this cut of a movie is my cut, there’s no sort of parallel universe version of the movie, there released movie is my cut. And that’s one of the toughest things about writing, shooting, and directing a film, is you end up with these orphans and you fucking love them and you think they’d be amazing scenes and do these amazing things but the film is a dictatorship [laughs], not a democracy, and just because something’s cool and charismatic doesn’t mean it gets to survive in the final cut. The flow of the movie is the highest master.”

So while this extended cut offers fans a closer look at the film, it’s not exactly a “director’s cut” like Zack Snyder’s Ultimate Edition of Batman v Superman pretty much was. Moreover, BvS was a full half hour longer in its extended cut, revealing some key plot points and much appreciated character development.

It’s unlikely there are any major reveals to be found in this 13 minutes of extra Suicide Squad footage, but previous reports suggested that an alternate version of the filmhad much more of the Joker/Harley Quinn relationship. Via set photos and these reports, we know that at least some of this footage covered the abusive relationship between Jared Leto and Margot Robbie’s characters, which is something that has to be handled very carefully in order to work. I’ll be curious to see if this new footage is more Joker, or if it’s simply extended versions of other scenes while staying in line with the basic narrative layout of the theatrical cut.

Personally, I liked Batman v Superman more than most and found the Ultimate Edition to be far superior to the theatrical cut.
