Jurassic World 2 will bring back Hero Guy (Chris Pratt) and Businesswoman (Bryce Dallas Howard), but J.A. Bayona’s sequel won’t have the original’s Comic Relief, Jake Johnson.

The actor took to Twitter to reveal that his character, Lowery, probably won’t be returning for the sequel:

I don’t know if that will make the film any better or worse, but Johnson was definitely one of the few bright spots of Jurassic World. He also has the film’s most memorable moment, which is when Lowery is just doing his job and Vincent D’Onofrio’s character just comes up from behind and does the creepiest shoulder squeeze ever. It’s such a weird, unsettling moment that’s wonderfully underplayed.

While it may seem odd to hope that JW2 can pull the franchise out of a ditch when Jurassic World made well over a billion dollars worldwide, the fact of the matter is that Jurassic Worldis a bad movie that uses iconography from Jurassic Park without understanding why that iconography or those scenes are important. The movie is essentially Lowery—it wears a Jurassic Park t-shirt to show that it’s a fan of the original but it does so unthinkingly.

Plot details on the sequel are still scarce but earlier this month we learned that the plot would serve as a metaphor for modern treatment of animals. Colin Trevorrow, who’s writing and producing the sequel, said:

“The dinosaurs will be a parable of the treatment animals receive today: the abuse, medical experimentation, pets, having wild animals in zoos like prisons, the use the military has made of them, animals as weapons.”

So Trevorrow still can’t get over the dumb idea of using dinosaurs as weapons. And I understand that the military does use animals in some of its tactics, but every time D’Onofrio’s character floated his idea of using raptors to kill terrorists, it sounded like a really terrible solution to a problem we’ve already solved. Like we have soldiers and drones that do a pretty great job of killing terrorists already. Putting a GoPro on a raptor and sending it into a cave doesn’t seem like the most efficient way of getting things done.
