Earlier today, the Critics Choice Awards announced their nominations with La La Land leading the pack with 12 nominations. Now Damien Chazelle’s musical has gotten another boost by being named “Best Film” from the New York Film Critics Circle. NYFCC is one of the most influential critics groups, and I’d be shocked if La La Land didn’t also pick up Best Film from the Los Angeles Film Critics (who announce their picks on December 4th) since the movie is a bit of a love letter to that city.

While La La Land picked up the top prize, it didn’t dominate, and there was some nice diversity in the other categories. Moonlight continues to pick up momentum by nabbing Best Director for Barry Jenkins and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali. Manchester by the Sea also did well by picking up wins for Best Screenplay (Kenneth Lonergan) and Best Actor (Casey Affleck). Isabelle Huppert also made some headway in the Best Actress race by being recognized for her work in both Elle and Things to Come. Michelle Williams was also recognized for two films, earning Best Supporting Actress for both Manchester by the Sea and Certain Women.
