Warner Bros. and DC Films have finally set a release date for the standalone debut of Jason Momoa‘s Aquaman. Per Deadline, the film is slated to open on October 5, 2018 in both 3D and IMAX. The Conjuring and Furious 7 helmer James Wan has been attached to direct the film since 2015, which will see the King of Atlantis return after his cameo in Batman v Superman and a proper introduction in 2017’s Justice League

Justice League will also introduce a couple of Aquaman’s fellow Atlantians; Willem Dafoe‘s Vulko and Amber Heard‘s Mera, who is expected to return for Aquaman. Not much is known about the plot at this point, The film will reportedly find Aquaman squaring off against his comic book arch-nemesis Black Manta. Warner Bros. previously announced that the film would find the “reluctant ruler of Atlantis, caught between a surface world constantly ravaging the sea and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt.” However, the script has undergone multiple drafts since the film was announced so it’s uncertain how closely they’ll stick to those original plans.

In terms of tone, Wan previously described Aquaman as a Swashbuckling adventure a la Indiana Jones:

“I kind of don’t want to give too much away but know this: The spirit that I’m going for is like a classic sort of swashbuckling action adventure, sort of high seas adventure story…It’s ultimately a quest story in the spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Romancing the Stone.”

Taking a look a the DCEU at large, Patty JenkinsWonder Woman arrives in theaters June 2, 2017 and Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman follow-up, Justice League, drops on November 17, 2017. The Flash is currently scheduled for March 16, 2018, but after a pair of director drop-outs, a release date delay is looking more and more likely.
