‘The Mummy’: Tom Cruise Fights Russell Crowe in Behind-the-Scenes Featurette!! Check It Out!!

The Mummy

Fresh off last night’s impressive trailer debut, Universal Pictures has unveiled a behind-the-scenes featurette for the upcoming redo The Mummy. The film is important for the studio as it’s intended to kick off an interconnected Universal Monsters universe, which is taking shape with Johnny Depp as The Invisible Man and Javier Bardem as Frankenstein. But Mummy is up first, and it gets things started with some major starpower as Tom Cruise leads the contemporary take on the classic monster film with Russell Crowe co-starring as the eponymous Dr. Jekyll.

In this behind-the-scenes featurette we get a taste of the massive world that director Alex Kurtzman—one of the masterminds of the Universal Monsters Universe alongside Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious franchise)—has created. It is, predictably, huge, but there’s also a strong focus on practical sets, practical environments, and practical effects. Indeed, when recently spoken with Kurtzman about the film, he revealed that Tom Cruise brought even more focus on practical effects to the picture, suggesting that for the key plane crash sequence they shoot in an actual plane with actual Zero G:

“When I brought [this set piece] up with Tom [Cruise], I said, ‘Here’s what we’re going to do, we’re going to build the set,’ he said, ‘Yeah, yeah, but we’ve got to do it for real’” I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ He’s like, ‘We’re going to go up in the vomit comet and we’re going to shoot the whole sequence there too.’ I said, ‘Yeah, but we can’t do it ALL in the vomit comet because the sequence is so extensive.’ He said, “’I know, we’re going to build that rotisserie set, we’re going to do part of it there and we’re going to do part of it in the vomit comet.’

I’ll admit I’ve been pretty skeptical of this film thus far, but the trailer, Kurtzman’s comments, and this behind-the-scenes video have me cautiously optimistic. Moreover, as you’ll see in the featurette, we get to see Cruise and Crowe go toe-to-toe in a fist fight!

Check out the new The Mummy featurette below. The film also stars Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, and Courtney B. Vance. The Mummy opens in theaters on June 9, 2017.
