George R.R. Martin’s ‘Nightflyers’ Series Heads to Syfy!!

Game of Thrones may be leaving HBO following its eighth season, but another project from author George R.R. Martin will soon head to television: Syfy has ordered a pilot based on Martin‘s 1980 novella Nightflyers.

The story, which was previously adapted for a 1987 film, revolves around a team of scientists venturing to the edge of the solar system in search of extraterrestrial life, Variety reports. Jeff Buhler penned the pilot’s script, with Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman among those on board to serve as executive producer.

“We are looking forward to diving deeper into George R.R. Martin‘s chilling world of Nightflyers,” NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment‘s Bill McGoldrick said in a statement. “The script that Jeff delivered encapsulates this classic sci-fi horror story and adapts it to a platform where we can truly explore the depths of madness.”

Nightflyers is the latest Martin property to find a potential TV home: In addition to the planned Game of Thrones spinoff that will arrive following the series’ eighth season, a show based on Martin‘s superhero anthology series Wild Cards is also in development; on Friday, Martin noted on his Not a Blog that “three” Wild Cards series could be in the works, plus “a couple other TV projects that I can’t tell you about…”

In April 2015, Martin revealed plans for an HBO series titled Captain Cosmos, about a young science fiction writer, but that project appears to have stalled.
