Unless you’ve been paying attention to the social media accounts for The New Mutants, you may have missed the slow rollout of marketing material that’s been doled out over the last couple of months. This clever tactic keeps the best parts of the film intact (at least until its torn apart by the trailer-making process) while both introducing newcomers to the characters and testing the depths of comic book knowledge (or your Googling ability) for diehard fans.
You’ll have to dig deep here to get just what exactly is going on in each of these teaser videos; some are a bit more obscure than others. What’s cool about them is they set the mood for Josh Boone‘s approach, one that’s more “haunted house” than “super-powered kids save the world.” I dig it, and I hope fans do, too.
The film stars Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair a.k.a.Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy as Ilyana Rasputin a.k.a. Magik, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa a.k.a. Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar a.k.a. Mirage, and Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes a.k.a. … Dr. Cecilia Reyes. New Mutants opens in theaters on April 13, 2018.
Here’s the collection of spooky, atmospheric, and mysterious teaser videos, along with a brief explanation of each:
Rahne Sinclair a.k.a. Wolfsbane
I’ll keep these explanations from getting too spoilery, but it suffices to say that this Scottish mutant was raised by a very stern and religious man by the name of Reverend Craig (who will be played by Mindhunter‘s Happy Anderson). That should be just about all you need to know to pick up on the religious iconography here.
Sam Guthrie a.k.a. Cannonball
This one’s a little trickier, but it teases Guthrie’s connection to his childhood labor in a Kentucky coal mine, in order to help provide for his family. Once you see the “canary in the coal mine” reference, it’s easier to understand.
Ilyana Rasputin a.k.a. Magik
The younger sister to Piotr Rasputin, a.k.a. Colossus, Ilyana’s abilities include teleportation and sorcery. That first power might explain why we’re looking at an empty cell, but the runes on display in the second video may end up being shorthand for Magik’s “stepping discs” pulled from the dimension known as Limbo … or they’re just cool artistic flourishes.
Roberto da Costa a.k.a. Sunspot
This one should be self-evident, yeah? The Brazilian son of a wealthy businessman can take the form of solid solar energy. In other words, he can burn stuff quite easily.
Danielle Moonstar a.k.a. Mirage
The fact that we’ve seen the most teasers for Dani leads me to believe that the bulk of The New Mutants story will center around her Demon Bear arc. The evidence for that is right in front of our nose: the snowy landscape, the blood, the bear-shaped necklace. Expect this to be a sizable chunk of the narrative, or at least Dani’s own story.
Dr. Cecilia Reyes
Ah, the overseer. Braga’s perhaps not-so-good doctor factors heavily into the film’s trailer, so it’s safe to say she’ll be playing the antagonist (at least the human one) throughout. Now don’t equate “antagonist” with villain in this sense. Dr. Cecilia Reyes might be holding the New Mutants in this not-very-hygienic locale in what she believes to be their best interests for healing and recovery … but it remains to be seen if that’s how things will end up. Reyes’ own history with mutants and mutant powers in the Marvel comics muddies the waters a bit here, so it’ll be interesting to see how she factors into the plot overall.
