Netflix has unveiled the first Lost in Space reboot trailer and images, giving us a peek at the highly anticipated new sci-fi series. Indeed, while the streaming service first gained prominence in the TV realm by reviving cancelled shows like Arrested Development or The Killing, Netflix has now moved firmly into creating content of its own. But the streaming giant isn’t above a good old fashioned IP revival, and Lost in Space has been one of its most ambitious TV shows on the docket for quite a while. It’s finally almost time to see what this Lost in Space reboot looks like as Netflix has announced an April 13th premiere date while revealing the very first images from the show.
Created by Dracula Untold screenwriting duo Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless with Prison Break and Once Upon a Time in Wonderland alum Zack Estrin serving as showrunner, Lost in Space is described as a “dramatic and modern reimagining” of the classic 1960s sci-fi series. The story takes place 30 years in the future, when space colonization is now a reality, and revolves around the Robinson family as they become one of a few selected to go and create a better world on a new planet. But during their venture, the Robinsons find themselves thrown off course and struggling to find the way towards their new home.
This Lost in Space reboot trailer is less of a traditional trailer and more of a trailer teaser or announcement video, simply giving folks a heads up of the show’s existence. But it does a solid job of teasing the reboot, and I’m mighty curious to see how the show holds up as a whole. Netflix just launched a pricey sci-fi series in Altered Carbon, but whereas that was more noir-tinged, Lost in Space is very much an adventure story.
Check out the Lost in Space reboot trailer teaser and first images below. The show stars Toby Stephens, Molly Parker, Ignacio Serricchio, Taylor Russell, Mina Sundwall, Maxwell Jenkins, Parker Posey, and Raza Jaffrey. All 10 episodes of the first season debut on Netflix on April 13th.
Here’s the official synopsis for Lost in Space:
Lost in Space is a Netflix Original dramatic and modern reimagining of the classic 1960’s science fiction series. Set 30 years in the future, colonization in space is now a reality, and the Robinson family is among those tested and selected to make a new life for themselves in a better world. But when the new colonists find themselves abruptly torn off course en route to their new home they must forge new alliances and work together to survive in a dangerous alien environment, light-years from their original destination. Stranded along with the Robinsons are two outsiders who find themselves thrown together by circumstance and a mutual knack for deception. The unsettlingly charismatic Dr. Smith (Parker Posey) is a master manipulator with an inscrutable end game. And the roguish, but inadvertently charming Don West (Ignacio Serricchio) is a highly-skilled, blue collar contractor, who had no intention of joining the colony, let alone crash landing on a lost planet.
