‘The Flash’: Iris Suits Up as a Speedster in New Image!! Check It Out!!

It seems like The Flash is taking this whole “We Are The Flash” thing pretty literally, huh? In the upcoming episode “Run, Iris, Run,” Barry’s super speed will get transferred over to Iris in the middle of a battle. So what is a girl to do except become the Flash and get a new Cisco-designed suit?  And yet …

Look, I’m all about badass Iris, and how the show finally seemed to have figured out a way to meaningfully incorporate her as a non-meta with a storyline that has really mattered. My point was that in Iris, we’ve seen a character who seemed adrift in the early seasons of the show become Team Leader for The Flash in a way that has worked out exceptionally well. I brought this up in contrast with what the show did with Cecile, who was given gestational telepathy in order to address a storyline with Joe that could have — and should have — been just talked out like adults. Kudos, I said, for making Iris’ non-meta storyline count! More of this!

And now … do I take it back? While it’s fun to see the members of Team Flash get to play around with different personalities (on various Earths) or get shrunk by an evil meta or what have you, Iris becoming The Flash (even temporarily) seems like it undermines the point that a character can matter and not be a meta. It’s something that Black Lightning has done very well, in making sure that all of its major characters have compelling storylines whether or not they have powers.

In any case, here’s the suit!

The Flash returns with new episodes on February 27th; Here’s the official synopsis of “Run, Iris, Run,” which will air Tuesday, March 13th on The CW.

IRIS SUITS UP — Team Flash confronts a new bus meta, Matthew AKA Melting Pot (guest star Leonardo Nam), with the ability to swap people’s DNA. During a battle with Team Flash, Matthew transfers Barry’s (Grant Gustin) super speed to Iris (Candice Patton). Now, with a new threat unleashed on Central City, Barry must act as the team leader while Iris takes on the mantle of superhero speedster in order to defeat their new foe. Harry Jierjian directed the episode written by Eric Wallace (#416).
