Damon Lindelof Teams with Blumhouse for Politically Charged Action-Thriller ‘The Hunt’!!!

Damon Lindelof is making a Blumhouse movie! The co-creator of Lost and The Leftovers is teaming with the production company behind last year’s mega-hit (and Oscar-winning) thriller Get Out to craft a thriller of his own, and he’s brought along some friends. THR reports that Lindelof has co-written an action thriller called The Hunt with Nick Cuse, the son of Lost co-showrunner Carlton Cuse. The project has Z for Zachariah and Compliance filmmaker Craig Zobel set to direct, and Blumhouse and Universal Pictures picked it up in a competitive situation.

While the logline is being kept under wraps, the subversive film is said to be inspired by the current political environment in America “with the aggressive nature of right versus the left,” and takes the situation to “a more extreme, and violent, level.” That sounds like it’ll fit right in with the studio that makes The Purge movies.

The entire team here comes from The Leftovers, Lindelof’s critically acclaimed HBO drama series that wrapped up its third and final season last year. Cuse was a writer on the show and Zobel directed multiple episodes, including the action-centric standouts “International Assassin” and “The Most Powerful Man in the World (and His Identical Twin Brother)”.

Lindelof will produce the film alongside Jason Blum, with Cuse and Zobel serving as executive producers. One imagines this kind of project sparked to various studios in the wake of Get Out’s success, as with that film Jordan Peele tapped into the public’s socio-political anxieties under the guise of a horror-thriller. It’ll be interesting to see exactly what Lindelof and Cuse have cooked up here, and I’m sure it will in no way be controversial.

After Lost, Lindelof penned a number of high-profile movie scripts including Prometheus and Tomorrowland, but he took a long break from films to focus on The Leftovers. The writer/producer is currently hard at work spearheading a pilot for a Watchmen adaptation at HBO, and if that show goes forward he’ll serve as showrunner. So while he’s definitely not leaving TV behind, it’s nice to know Lindelof still has time to bang out a new feature every now and then.

Hopefully we’ll hear more about this tantalizing project soon.
