Eddie Murphy has signed on to star in a remake of the Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau comedy Grumpy Old Men, which is in development at Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema.
The film is set to be directed by Tim Story (Ride Along), and will see Murphy portraying one of two ageing neighbours whose lifelong feud intensifies when a new female neighbour (played by Ann-Margret in the original) moves into their street. As yet, there’s no word on Murphy’s co-star, although Samuel L. Jackson – who recently worked with Story on the upcoming Shaft sequel – has been mentioned as a possibility.
Released in 1993, Grumpy Old Men marked the sixth big screen collaboration between Lemmon and Matthau, and grossed $70 million at the box office. The cast reunited two years later for the sequel Grumpier Old Men, which earned $71.5 million.
