Reign of the Supermen: DC’s Next Animated Film Debuts Footage!! Check It Out!!

It’s a bird…it’s a plane…it’s…Supermen? That’s what many citizens of Metropolis have been saying in the six months since The Death of Superman. Based on the 1993 comic series, the DC animated movie adapted the classic story for modern times.

Featuring the New 52/Rebirth Justice League, it made their defeat at the hands of Doomsday that much more epic, and losing Superman even more tragic. Following his death, 4 NEW Supermen appeared, each one attempting to claim the mantle of the Man of Tomorrow.

In 2019, fans will be able to see who wins that battle when the follow-up to The Death of Superman, Reign of the Supermen, is released on digital and Blu-Ray. The cast and creators stopped by New York Comic-Con‘s main stage to discuss this classic tale.

Executive Producer James Tucker says that for the uninitiated, that the story will be “a mystery and an emotional journey, [trying to figure out] who fills the void that Superman left.” He also joked that since this story took place in 2018 and 1993, that there would be  “no mullets.” The shocking announcement gained some surprising boos from the crowd (we hope they were “just kidding” boos).

Character designer Phil Bourassa (who also designed the characters of Young Justice), said updating the characters DC created 25 years ago was a “tricky needle to thread.” “When you’re adapting from a different era, you want to be faithful to what the essential aspects of those characters are.

Screenwriter Tim Sheridan mirrored those comments when discussing writing the story for a modern time. [While we had to change things around, we were] completely faithful to the themes of the book.

Some of the cast was on hand as well, and they seemed just as happy to be there as the fans. Nyambi Nyambi, who plays J’onn J’onzz, had bought a 4-day badge before he knew he was going to be on the panel. He jokingly kept looking at his watch because they were “taking him from his con time.” He also described being part of the DC Universe as “surreal.”

Toks Olagundoye (Cat Grant) had a hard time holding in her excitement in the voice booth. “its hard not to act like a little girl because I could never imagine doing this for work and get paid for it. I have to focus on doing my job because it’s so thrilling for me. If he had to describe the experience in one word, Patrick Fabian (Hank Henshaw/Cyborg Superman) said very enthusiastically “cool.”

Fans were treated to sneak peek clips from the movie, each one focusing on one of the four Supermen. Besides the Cyborg Superman, there was the Eradicator, Superboy, and Steel. Without giving away any spoilers, one of the clips featured the funniest Justice League interaction of any of the DC Animated films. It’s worth getting the movie for that alone.

If you’ve read the original comic, you may have an idea what will happen in Reign of the Supermen. However, this is one for a modern era. What will change? What will stay the same? What’s 100 percent certain is that the hard work looks to be paying off in bringing one of the greatest DC tales to life.

Reign of the Superman will release sometime at the beginning of 2019.
