Voltage Pictures has tapped Aliens of the Deep director Steven Quale to direct Alphas, an aquatic thriller scripted by Frank Hannah (The Cooler), reports Variety.

The film will see a small coastal town terrorized by a school of great white sharks, and the residents’ only hope is a damaged killer whale which has been kept in solitary confinement for years after killing its trainer.

“[Alphas] is highly commercial yet sophisticated,” said producer Nicolas Chartier (The Hurt Locker). “Steven Quale has a formidable track record of bringing beautifully made blockbusters.”

In addition to Aliens of the Deep, Quale’s C.V. includes the horror sequel Final Destination 5 and disaster flick Into the Storm.
