‘Happiest Season’: Mackenzie Davis to Play Kristen Stewart’s Girlfriend in Sony’s Rom Com!!

Rising star Mackenzie Davis is in talks to join Kristen Stewart in TriStar’s lesbian rom-com Happiest Season, Collider has confirmed.

Stewart will play a young woman who is planning to propose to her girlfriend in front of her girlfriend’s family. The catch? Her girlfriend (Davis) hasn’t come out yet to her conservative parents.

Happiest Season marks the second film from director Clea DuVall following her 2016 debut The Intervention, though it will be her first studio movie. She also co-wrote the script with actress Mary Holland, who I’m told will be playing Davis’ sister —  the nicest, weirdest and most accepting member of her family, who treat her like a bit of a black sheep compared to her sisters.

Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen, Isaac Klausner and Jaclyn Huntling are producing the film, which Hannah Minghella and Shary Shirazi will oversee on behalf of TriStar.

DuVall is a promising filmmaker and between Stewart and now Davis, this is a great cast for a movie about the struggle to come out, something that no one should ever have to feel any shame over. I’ll be interested to see what the tone of this as, as the Hollywood Reporter described it as a romantic comedy, but I’m sensing some dramatic elements here, particularly given the casting.

Best known for the acclaimed AMC series Halt and Catch Fire, Davis is coming off a well-reviewed turn opposite Charlize Theron in Jason Reitman‘s Tully. She next stars in Tim Miller‘s upcoming Terminator movie alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, and she has also wrapped Amblin’s horror movie The Turning with Finn Wolfhard from Stranger Things. Davis, who also appeared in the sci-fi movies The Martian and Blade Runner 2049, is represented by UTA.

Holland is an up-and-coming actress who is coming off a widely-seen AT&T commercial in which she plays a grown woman who sends emails to Santa and refuses to share his email address. She has appeared on numerous TV shows including Blunt Talk and Veep, and just shot a pilot for Comedy Central called Robbie. Holland also popped up in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, Brie Larson‘s directorial debut Unicorn Store, and she played the scene-stealing triage nurse in Netflix’s raucous comedy The Package. This year, Holland will be seen in the soccer mom comedy Greener Grass and Dolly Wells‘ indie dramedy Good Posture. she’s repped by ICM Partners and Atlas Artists.
