Huzzah and kudos to Barry, Bill Hader‘s excellent HBO series, which has been renewed by the premium network today for Season 3. The series received three Emmys for its first season: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Bill Hader); Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Henry Winkler); and Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (Half-Hour) and Animation. For those who know and love it, Barry is both a comedy and a drama, one that is as hilarious as it is emotionally devastating.
As I wrote in my review of Season 2, “One of the things that made the first season of Bill Hader’s HBO series so exceptional was how it managed to make violent shifts in tone feel completely organic. Every short half-hour episode is a rollercoaster ride of emotions, from the always-hilarious exploits NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan) to a suddenly deeply dark exploration of Barry’s first kill. Barry has extraordinary balance, much like its titular character in the way he must also juggle his duel natures of assassin and am-dram actor.”
The second season is already living up to the excellent opening run, but as far as where things go from here, who can guess? At least we know we can enjoy the ride for another season after this one (and hopefully even more after that).
Barry also stars Stephen Root as Barry’s handler, Sarah Goldberg as a dedicated acting student who becomes the object of Barry’s affection; and Henry Winkler as a pompous yet endearing acting teacher who takes Barry under his wing.
