One of the first TV series to head to the new streaming service Disney+ will be an adaptation of the hit 2018 film Love, Simon. The movie itself was an adaptation of the Becky Albertalli book Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and revolved around the high school life of a closeted young gay man. The film was an absolute delight, presenting an LGBTQ story that wasn’t mired in tragedy or self hate. Instead, it more closely resembled just any other teen movie—albeit this time shedding a light on same-sex romance.

Which is why news of the Love, Simon TV series at Disney+ is a bit odd, yet no doubt encouraging. Per Variety,Greg Berlanti—who helmed the film—will not be involved in the show due to the giant overall deal he signed with Warner Bros. Television (he oversees the CW superhero shows, Riverdale, etc.). Additionally, the property is being eyed for This Is Us showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger who have admittedly steered a successful series before, albeit one that shuns authenticity for maximum drama. Add in the fact that Disney have never really been all that focused on inclusivity, and you can understand why there’s a bit of caution here.

But don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of continuing the Love, Simon story in a TV series form, and I’m all for telling more LGBTQ stories. I’m just a bit wary of how this specific story is going to be told, given the studio behind it.

Disney was able to nab Love, Simon as a TV series after acquiring 20th Century Fox. The film was released by Fox 2000, a Fox imprint that focused on teen and YA content like The Hate U Give, but after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, they unfortunately shuttered the Fox 2000 unit.

No word on how soon the Love, Simon TV series would launch.
