Game of Thrones threw a whole bunch of curveballs at us last night in “The Last of the Starks.” Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) dragon child Rhaegal was shot out of the sky by insane pirate captain Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbæk). Missandei of Naath (Nathalie Emmanuel) met one of the more brutal ends in recent Thrones memory, beheaded at the front gate of King’s Landing on the orders of Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey). The biggest, most important battle in Westeros history is about go down next week, with the fate of the Seven Kingdoms hanging in the balance.
But everyone just wants to talk about the coffee cup.
Early into “The Last of the Starks”, during the all-night drink-a-thon in Winterfell following the horrors of “The Long Night”, a shot of Dany definitely appeared to include a very modern-looking coffee cup sitting on the table. The internet, as the internet does, immediately got to dunking on what looked like the first Starbucks in Westeros history. HBO released an extremely necessary statement, which took the gaffe in stride, but made sure to note that the coffee was from craft services, not Starbucks. (No free advertising on THIS high-fantasy series.)
In response to inquiries from those who saw a craft services coffee cup in Sunday night’s episode of GAME OF THRONES, HBO states, “The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.”
Hey man, I’m glad HBO PR gets to have a little fun. It’s gotta’ be a stressful gig, fielding demands for Confederate season 1 all day. In fact, everyone involved in the episode seems to be havin’ a laugh over the whole thing. “We’re sorry!” executive-producer Bernie Caulfield said during a WNYC radio interview, before noting “if that’s the worst thing they’re finding, then we’re in good shape.”
