‘His Dark Materials’: New Trailer Sets Up a War Among Parallel Worlds on HBO!!

HBO has released a new trailer for its upcoming adaptation of His Dark Materials, an adaptation of Sir Philip Pullman’s well-loved trilogy of fantasy novels. The epic tale is a fantasy adventure dealing with parallel worlds and what looks like a classic war between good and evil, and yet, it’s likely not so simple.

As Vinnie Mancuso wrote regarding the last trailer, “His Dark Materials takes place in a Victorian-inspired alternate reality in which humans live side by side with the living embodiments of their souls, known as daemons. The story follows a young woman named Lyra Belacqua (played here by Logan breakout Dafne Keen) who traverses several multiverses with her daemon, Pantalaimon. You might recognize the name of the first novel, The Golden Compass, as the title of the 2007 film adaptation from director Chris Weitz that miraculously managed to be terrible despite the presence of both Nicole Kidman and armor-wearing battle bears.”

The series also stars Ruth Wilson, James McAvoyLin-Manuel Miranda, Clarke PetersAriyon Bakare, and Georgina Campbell. Check out the trailer below:

Here’s the full synopsis for His Dark Materials:

Adapting Philip Pullman’s award-winning trilogy of the same name, which is considered a modern masterpiece of imaginative fiction, the first season follows Lyra, a seemingly ordinary but brave young woman from another world. Her search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children, and becomes a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. As she journeys through the worlds, including our own, Lyra meets Will, a determined and courageous boy. Together, they encounter extraordinary beings and dangerous secrets, with the fate of both the living — and the dead — in their hands.
