‘Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies’ Moves From HBO Max to Paramount+!!

A Grease prequel series is on the move.

The show, set at the beloved musical’s Rydell High, has landed at ViacomCBS‘ nascent streaming platform Paramount+ after originally being ordered for WarnerMedia‘s HBO Max. It’s also being retitled and reconceived: The initial title, Grease: Rydell High, has been jettisoned in favor of Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, with a focus on how Sandy, Rizzo, Jan, Marty and Frenchy came together and how the reverence, fear and moral panic they sparked changed Rydell forever.

Writer and executive producer Annabel Oakes (Awkward) remains with the show.

Paramount+ declined comment.

The move comes after HBO Max opted not to go forward with the show. Earlier this year a management shakeup at WarnerMedia put HBO topper Casey Bloys put in charge of the streamer and saw WarnerMedia Entertainment and direct to consumer head Bob Greenblatt depart, along with chief content officer Kevin Reilly. HBO Max, under Greenblatt, had given the show a straight to series order in November 2019.

Rise of the Pink Ladies is produced by Paramount Television Studios. Picturestart and Temple Hill — who are behind a Grease feature film prequel titled Summer Lovin’ — also produce.

The series adds another familiar title to Paramount+, a rebranded CBS All Access that’s slated to launch in early 2021. The platform’s originals also include a scripted series based on the making of The Godfather, a revival of Mara Brock Akil‘s comedy The Game and spy drama Lioness from Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan.
