Season 2 of the CW‘s Stargirl has officially cast its villains Eclipso and The Shade. Based on the comic book character created by Geoff Johns and Lee Moder, Stargirl follows teen Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bessinger) after she discovers a powerful cosmic staff and becomes the hero Stargirl. For its first season, Stargirl aired on both the CW and streaming service DC Universe, but after the series became a hit for the network, it moved exclusively to the CW for season 2. This makes Stargirl the only DC show on the CW that doesn’t fit within the Arrowverse, despite having a brief cameo in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event.
Stargirl season 1 featured the Injustice Society of America as the main villains going up against Courtney and her friends. However, with the season finale largely defeating the ISA, it’s certain that season 2 will focus on some new antagonists. The finale teased two newcomers to the world of Stargirl, Eclipso and The Shade, and Johns (who also serves as showrunner) hyped up both villains during New York Comic-Con. Eclipso is currently being held in a black diamond that’s fallen into the hands of Cindy Burman (Meg Delacy), while The Shade was glimpsed watching the ISA’s defeat from within their own headquarters.
Per Deadline, the parts of Eclipso and The Shade have finally been filled. Nick Tarabay (The Expanse) has been tapped to step into the series regular role of Eclipso, while Jonathan Cake (The Affair) will play The Shade. Interestingly, Tarabay previously appeared on Arrowverse flagship show Arrow, playing Digger Harkness, aka Captain Boomerang, and Cake played Blackbeard on Legends of Tomorrow. Additionally, Stargirl season 2 has cast Ysa Penarejo in an unknown recurring role.
Both Eclipso and The Shade are poised to serve as major opponents for Courtney and the Justice Society of America, making for some very real threats for the young heroes to contend with. However, it seems likely that Eclipso will be the bigger villain of Stargirl season 2, purely because Tarabay has signed on as a series regular and Cake is recurring. Still, fans should expect both bad guys to wreck some serious havoc.
Stargirl season 1 also ended with the shocking reveal that the previous owner of Courtney’s cosmic staff, Sylvester Pemberton (Joel McHale), might actually be alive. Between that game-changing cliffhanger and the arrivals of Eclipso and The Shade, Stargirl season 2 is shaping up to be a thrilling ride for audiences. As of right now, the season doesn’t have a release date, but it seems likely that Stargirl will premiere later in 2021. Fans will just have to wait a while longer before Courtney’s next adventures arrive.
Stargirl season 2 will premiere in 2021.
