Amazon has released the first-look images for its Eddie Murphy comedy sequel, Coming 2 America.
The photos were posted to the Prime Video Twitter account and feature Murphy back as the royal son Akeem of Zamunda, along with Arsenio Hall as Akeem’s trusted friend and confidante Semmi. Others pictured are James Earl Jones as Akeem’s father King Jaffe Joffer and Shari Headley as Akeem’s wife Lisa McDowell, both of whom are reprising their roles from 1988’s Coming to America. In addition, these photos provide a sneak peek at Randy Watson, a member of the soul band Sexual Chocolate who’s also played by Murphy.
Coming 2 America was originally slated to be released by Paramount in theaters last summer, but was later delayed to December 25, 2020. However, that was before the start of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which led to a historic drop-off at the box office and multiple films releasing directly to streaming this year. After that, Paramount sold the rights to Coming 2 America to Amazon in a deal reported to be worth $125 million. The film has since been rescheduled to premiere on Amazon Prime March 5, 2021.
Story-wise, the Coming to America sequel picks up in the present-day, as Akeem is about to be crowned the new King of Zamunda, only to discover he has a son he never knew about — a “street savvy Queens native” named Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler). Hoping to honor his ailing father’s wish to make Lavelle the new crown prince, Akeem and Semmi set off on an adventure that brings them back to New York. Wesley Snipes also costars as Akeem’s nemesis, General Izzi.
Directed by Craig Brewer, Coming 2 America stars Eddie Murphy as Akeem/Randy, Arsenio Hall as Semmi, Jermaine Fowler as Lavelle, Leslie Jones as Lavelle’s mother, Tracy Morgan as Reem, James Earl Jones as Jaffe Joffer and Louie Anderson as Maurice. The film arrives on Amazon Prime Video March 5, 2021.
