One of the most iconic characters in the entire Mortal Kombat franchise is the fiery ninja Scorpion, risen from Hell on a mission of eternal vengeance.
With Mortal Kombat less than a month away from arriving in theaters and on HBO Max, a new promo from the movie shows Hanzo Hasashi, before his transformation, taking on a group of masked warriors menacing his home. Even without Scorpion’s awesome abilities, the stoic warrior is more than able to hold his own, dispatching his attackers with bloody efficiency.
Portrayed by Hiroyuki Sanada, the promo gives audiences an idea of the intense action to come, with Hanzo hurling a spear, foreshadowing his signature weapon as an undead warrior centuries later in the iconic martial arts tournament.
Producer Todd Garner previously revealed that the new Mortal Kombat movie is meant to stand on its own, so audiences can be reintroduced to the franchise while honoring the video game source material and lore. With that in mind, Sanada worked with the filmmakers to ensure that Scorpion’s redesign more accurately reflected Japanese feudal culture for his inclusion in the film.
Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan, Mortal Kombat stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Matilda Kimber as Emily Young and Laura Brent as Allison Young. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max April 16.
