David Fincher‘s Mank received more Oscar nominations than any other movie but Chloé Zhao‘s Nomadland won the Best Picture prize on Sunday night, with Zhao winning Best Director as well.
There were major surprises in the lead acting races, where The Father star Anthony Hopkins upset the late Chadwick Boseman, while Hopkins‘ fellow past winner Frances McDormand won her third acting Oscar for Nomadland, holding off Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) and Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman).
In the supporting acting races, Daniel Kaluuya took home his first Oscar for his spirited supporting turn in Judas and the Black Messiah, and Korean superstar Yuh-jung Youn won for her wonderful turn in Minari.
As expected Zhao won the Academy Award for Best Director, becoming just the second woman to win that particular Oscar along with Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker). Zhao also becomes the first woman of color to win Best Director, and interest in her next film, Marvel‘s Eternals, is already sky-high.
Following a dazzling intro featuring One Night in Miami director Regina King, the ceremony began with the screenplay categories, where Promising Young Woman and The Father triumphed over The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Nomadland, respectively.
Thomas Vinterberg‘s Danish film Another Round won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film, while Pixar‘s Soul was named Best Animated Feature and Netflix‘s My Octopus Teacher won the Oscar for Best Documentary.
Netflix also saw Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom win Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Mank win Best Cinematography and Best Production Design. Elsewhere, Amazon‘s Sound of Metal also picked up a pair of Oscar wins for Best Editing and Best Sound.
This year’s shorts awards went to Two Distant Strangers (live-action) Colette (documentary) and If Anything Happens I Love You (animated). Finally, Tenet triumphed in the category of Best Visual Effects, which was widely expected.
