Blurr (2022) Review!!

Synopsis – The story of a woman who’s slowly losing her sight whilst trying to investigate the death of her twin sister.

My Take – Though Taapsee Pannu has mixed it up by dabbling in romances, comedies and dramas ever since she marked her first foray into Hindi cinema, however, until recently she has been mainly recognized as the go to actress for starring in sports dramas, albeit with mixed results. Nevertheless, over the past year, it seems like Taapsee has finally found the right genre that aligns perfectly with her acting style and talent – high concept thrillers.

Unsurprising as her biggest critical successes came in the form of Pink (2016) and Badla (2019). Doubling down on these stint, her latest, a ZEE5 release, sees Taapsee once again starring in an adaption of Spanish screenwriter-director Oriol Paulo‘s works. While Badla and Dobaara (2022) were remakes of The Invisible Guest (2016) and Mirage (2018), both directed by Paulo, this one is based on Julia’s Eyes (2010), co-written by Paulo and produced by Guillermo Del Toro.

Thankfully, the end results too lie in the same vein – a well-executed true-to-its-genre thriller that rewards you for staying on for throughout its run time. Known for looking beyond the obvious and navigating the thin line between right and wrong, here, underrated writer-director Ajay Bahl, known for helming B.A. Pass (2012) and Section 375 (2019), once again succeeds in keeping us hooked to a twisted tale where the goal is to scare us with the ordinary.

Packed with twists and intrigue every split second of the way, the film never loses sight of its primary purpose i.e. delivering a thriller that makes the most of its resources.

Sure, it doesn’t break any new ground in the thriller terrain, nor does it nail all the questions with logical explanations, but for the most part, it lives up to its promise. It helps that Taapsee Pannu, who is also the film’s producer, headlines the nifty crime drama without missing a trick, firmly establishing herself as the new queen of thriller flicks.

The story follows Gayatri (Taapsee Pannu), who upon waking up from a bad dream that serves as a premonition of a calamity, heads to a hill town in Uttarakhand, with her husband Neel (Gulshan Devaiah), to check up on her sightless sister, Gautami (Taapsee Pannu), who lives alone. Unfortunately, upon reaching the two are shocked to find her body hanging from the ceiling. With no evidence of foul play to be found, the investigating police officer, Mahendra Chandel (Sumit Nijhawan), is convinced with what appears to be clearly a suicide, but Gayatri refused to accept.

Convinced of foul play, Gayatri heads out to prove a murder as she follows clues to investigate the death and unearths discomforting secrets, some linked to her life. All the while suffering from degenerative eye condition like her sister, leaving her confused between imagination and danger.

Basically with its chills and thrills, this one is essentially a vulnerable woman stuck inside a confined area trying to fight off a potential killer kind of film that utilizes the ‘Alone with the Psycho’ trope. And like any good thriller, it gives us a number of suspects. While the first half is extremely taut and will scare you stiff, the thrill element elevates in the second half and with double the jump thrown in at good measure.

Here, director Ajay Bahl supervises the eerie material with care and a gripping understanding of the suspense genre. Without deviating much from the story line, director Ajay Bahl and co-writer Pawan Soni’s vision of peeling the hidden layers of the mystery is highly effective. The sequences when Gayatri loses her vision due to progressive blindness are well-done, and Taapsee pulls those off adroitly. Gayatri’s progressive vision loss becomes a metaphor for a society that chooses not to see the old and the infirm around it.

The narrative progressively fuzzes the conscience and stirs our imagination as it looks at the dangers of not being seen and not being able to see. Even the extreme corners to which social rejections can push a person to, is explained through minute details in this film. Though the cinematography adds a sense of gloominess that one might expect from the story, the setting builds the right amount of suspense.

The characters and dialogues are written in a way that will leave you with an eerie feeling. There are even frames that look brilliant, specifically for a thriller. When tied together, these elements make up for the effect that the film is trying to reach for. We are left guessing if the perpetrator is human or an ominous being. Yes, the 126 minute long film could have been tighter especially in the second half, and the thriller aspect works better than the horror touches it has been given throughout. Nevertheless, the excellent climax makes up for it.

Without a doubt, Taapsee Pannu gives another stellar performance. She is in almost every frame and exudes conviction. Striking the right balance between the strength and vulnerability of the character, Taapsee, makes the growing upheaval inside Gayatri absolutely relatable. Gulshan Devaiah too is once again solid, despite limited scope.

However, the biggest catch of the film is Abhilash Thapliyal, who apart from being a powerful performer makes for an uncanny screen presence. In other roles, Kruttika Desai, Sumit Nijhawan, Radha Solanki and S.M. Zaheer are effective. On the whole, ‘Blurr’ is a riveting and taut thriller that is assiduously designed and well-acted.
