In its latest installments inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios seems to be making a point of keeping 2008’s The Incredible Hulk more alive than ever inside the franchise’s canon. Today, a major player in the original Hulk movie has been slated to come back for Captain America: New World Order. Lord of the Rings trilogy alum Liv Tyler is confirmed to return to the MCU, reprising the role of Betty Ross fifteen years after playing the character for the first time.
The news that Tyler is returning to the MCU doesn’t come too much as a shock, though, since her onscreen father General “Thunderbolt” Ross has been an important part of the MCU in previous Phases, and had special appearances in Captain America: Civil War and in the last two Avengers movies. Ross was already slated to return for Captain America: New World Order, but this time the character is played by Harrison Ford. The Star Wars veteran took over the role after William Hurt died in 2022.
When Did We Last See Liv Tyler as Betty Ross?
The character of Betty Ross, who helped Bruce Banner (then played by Edward Norton) have better control of the beast within him, ended up lost in the past after the Hulk storyline suffered several alterations, including the recasting of the main character who has since been played by Mark Ruffalo. Until this point, it seemed unlikely that Tyler would return to the story because the Hulk’s origins seemed kind of scrapped by the MCU, but now we can get excited about the possibilities of her return in Phase Five.
Who Else Has The MCU Brought Back?
Aside from the Rosses, the MCU previously also brought back the villain from The Incredible Hulk as a major player in the TV series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Throughout the episodes, the Abomination (Tim Roth) was the main client of Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) and she tried to free him from prison after he declared he truthfully regretted the destructive actions he committed back in 2008. If the MCU intended to send the message that The Incredible Hulk is alive and well in their memory, that message is now louder and clearer than ever with Tyler‘s return.
Captain America: New World Order will be the first feature film in which the title character is played by Anthony Mackie. His transition from Falcon to Captain America was chronicled in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and the series’ events will play directly into the movie – especially the ending, in which a third Captain America is unveiled and with morals that greatly differ from those defended by Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). The movie, which has just started filming, is directed Julius Onah and written by Dalan Musson and Malcolm Spellman. Aside from Tyler, Mackie, and Ford, Captain America: New World Order also features Sebastian Stan, Tim Blake Nelson, Carl Lumbly, Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, and Xosha Roquemore.
Captain America: New World Order is set to premiere in theaters a little over a year from now, on May 3, 2024.
