‘Polly Pocket’: Lena Dunham’s Mattel Movie Is Moving Ahead!!

Mattel is riding high on the success of Greta Gerwig‘s live-action Barbie, with plans to continue turning their iconic toys into more live-action features. Among them is the mini-doll with a big impact: Polly Pocket. The news was first reported in 2021, but it now has a milestone update. According to producer Robbie Brenner via Variety, Polly Pocket officially has a script and is one step closer to coming to fruition.

As Polly Pocket is still early in development, no public details about the storyline have yet been revealed beyond its core character. Brenner told Variety that a “great” script was turned in, further adding on praise for the movie’s controversial writer-director Lena Dunham and attached lead actress Lily Collins. Brenner is also optimistic that the movie will eventually be made, though of course that’s still some ways off.

“It’s been an amazing collaboration. Lena is so collaborative and rolls up her sleeves and really likes to roll around in notes and listen. She’s incredible. Lily is so smart and so specific and so productorial. It’s just been an incredible collaboration, so we are thrilled about it. Hopefully, we’ll be making that at some point in the future.”

A Brief History of Polly Pocket

Similar to the Barbie dolls most people are familiar with, Polly Pocket has been around for several decades, first hitting the scene in the 1980s. The doll gained her name from her signature mini size, being a toy you could literally fit in your pocket. Since its inception, Polly Pocket has expanded into a variety of different toys, with a plethora of different sets, accessories, clothing, pets and more — basically Barbie but miniature. Polly Pocket has also become a franchise of its own, with various animated television programs, movies, and children’s books.

For now, it seems much of the previously announced Polly Pocket team is on board for the toy-centric live-action feature. Dunham is currently set to produce the film as well, with Liz Watson set to executive produce through Dunham‘s banner Good Thing Going. Brenner and Kevin McKeon will oversee the film on behalf of Mattel Films, while Sandino Moya-Smith and Winnie Carillo overses for MGM Studios. In the earlier report, Dunham expressed her excitement for tackling the IP, noting how Polly Pocket offered “countless hours of childhood escapism for me – Polly gave me a tiny world of magic and autonomy to narrate.”
