‘The Nun 2’ Director Promises a Darker and More Violent Sequel!!

The Nun II director Michael Chaves opened up about making a more scary sequel to satisfy the audience’s growing appetite for horror.

Per SFX Magazine, Chaves teased what fans should expect from The Nun II, describing it as probably the most violent movie of The Conjuring franchise. He confirmed that they leveled up the horror for the sequel by creating a much “darker ” and “more violent” story for Valak’s return. “I think that this does get darker,” he said. “Even audiences have said this, when we screened it. It is definitely more violent than what they expected from a Conjuring movie.”

Chaves added, “It’s always a delicate balance. It’s definitely scary, it’s 100% delivered on that. Just as horror audiences have developed the appetite for horror, the appetite for violence has started to increase, and so there are some violent elements in this.”

Valak Returns to Haunt Sister Irene in The Nun II

After successfully surviving Valak’s demonic attacks in Romania during the first installment, Taissa Farmiga returns to reprise Sister Irene in The Nun II, where the audience will see her trying to live an anonymous life in a convent in Italy. However, her life is about to get disrupted once again when she’s forced to confront her traumatic past. According to producer James Wan, Sister Irene’s friendship with Frenchie/ Maurice (played by Jonas Bloquet) will propel her to face the demon nun again. At the end of 2018’s The Nun, Frenchie was secretly possessed by Valak (played by Bonnie Aarons) which allowed her to escape from the Romanian convent.

“He [Frenchie] realizes that there’s only one person that can really help him, and he reaches out to Taissa Farmiga‘s character,” Wan revealed. “I love this platonic friendship that the two of them have. She cares very much for him, and she wants to do everything she can to help him. At the same time, she has to confront this evil and fight it again.” As seen in the official trailer, The Nun II will take the horror from a convent to an all-girls Catholic boarding school, where Valak begins terrorizing young girls.

Chaves directed The Nun II from a screenplay written by Akela Cooper, Ian Goldberg, and Richard Naing, This marks the filmmaker’s third collaboration with Wan following The Curse of La Llorona and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. Joining Farmiga, Aarons, and Bloquet are Storm Reid, Anna Popplewell, and Katelyn Rose Downey. The upcoming movie will be the Euphoria star’s second horror project for 2023, following her Emmy-nominated performance in HBO’s The Last of Us Season 1.

The Nun II premieres in theaters on Sept. 8.
