HBO is ready to enter 2024 in full force, with a new video giving audiences a sneak peek of what the studio will be releasing next year. The second season of House of the Dragon, the premiere of The Penguin and the return of True Detective are some of the most anticipated events from the network in the next twelve months, setting the stage for some of the biggest titles in television to make a comeback. In addition to the new premieres, some of the most beloved HBO and Max series are set to return with new episodes, including Hacks and The Sex Lives of College Girls.
The second season of House of the Dragon will follow Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) as she continues to fight for the throne of Westeros. The first trailer for the season was recently released at CCXP, giving viewers their first look at how Rhaenyra will declare war against Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) over the death of her son. The former friends become mortal enemies in the prequel to Game of Thrones, with both sides trying to keep the legacy of the family who ruled over Westeros for centuries. Decades before Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) tried to reclaim what belonged to her family, Rhaenyra and Alicent had matters to settle.
The Penguin picks up after the events of The Batman, with Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell) trying to make a name for himself in the new criminal underworld established in Gotham City. The city was flooded thanks to The Riddler’s (Paul Dano) plan, and with Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) dead, someone has to take over the criminal organization he left behind. The events of the series will lead into the highly anticipated The Batman: Part II, currently set to be released in theaters in 2025.
Looking Forward to 2025
While the video mostly focuses on the television series HBO will release next year, it did confirm some of the studio’s biggest properties won’t return until 2025. The third season of Euphoria, starring Zendaya as a high school student with a substance abuse problem, will be one of the shows coming back to television in 2025. It will be joined by the second season of The Last of Us, the video game adaptation starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey set in a universe where an infection caused most of the world’s population to turn into zombies. The future looks bright for both HBO and Max.
