The Jason Momoa-led Minecraft movie at Warner Bros. may have just unveiled its mysterious “funny lady” cast member. Jennifer Coolidge, fresh off of her second Emmy win for HBO‘s The White Lotus, is joining the high-profile video game adaptation. According to Deadline, she’s now part of an increasingly star-studded ensemble, including Momoa alongside Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen who are currently filming for the project in New Zealand.
Details of the Minecraft movie’s plot have been kept tightly under wraps, including the roles of each cast member. In a recent interview with The Salt Lake Tribune, however, filmmaking duo Jared and Jerusha Hess, best known for creating the comedy classic Napoleon Dynamite, said their take on the global smash hit sandbox game would make a “fun, ridiculous movie.” A few plot ideas have been thrown around in the past, including one more directly based on the game’s big bad, the Ender Dragon, but the open-ended nature of the Microsoft/Mojang game allows for a lot of freedom for the pair to deliver something creative.
Coolidge is certainly another reason for fans to get excited, however. She’s a true standout in Hollywood thanks to her role as the privileged Tanya in Mike White‘s darkly comedic The White Lotus. So beloved was her character that she was one of only two to continue her vacation from Season 1 to Season 2 alongside her new husband Greg (Jon Gries), though she sadly won’t be making the trip to Thailand for Season 3. Aside from Tanya, however, she boasts plenty of high-profile roles to her name, including Legally Blonde, American Pie, Promising Young Woman, and A Mighty Wind alongside Ryan Murphy‘s The Watcher series on Netflix.
What’s Else Does Jennifer Coolidge Have Lined Up?
Minecraft is certainly Coolidge‘s biggest project on the horizon given its worldwide popularity with over 300 million copies sold and nearly 140 million active players per month, but it’s far from her only upcoming work. She’s most notably set to flex her comedy chops alongside Pete Davidson, Ed Harris, Brian Cox, Gabrielle Union, Bill Murray, and Dustin Hoffman in Riff Raff, a crime comedy about a criminal having a reckoning with his old family. A second season of The Watcher is also on the way to follow up on the unresolved mystery of who was terrorizing the Brannock house, but Coolidge previously told Entertainment Weekly that she hadn’t been asked to return at that time back in 2022.
Minecraft isn’t due out until April 4, 2025. In the meantime, check out our full guide here for everything to know about the film ahead of its release.
