‘Squid Game’ Season 2 to Premiere in 2024!!

The second season of Squid Game will premiere this year, according to Variety. The announcement was made by the Netflix through a letter directed to the streaming platform’s shareholders. Audiences have waited years to find out what will happen to Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) next, considering how the first installment premiered on television more than two years ago. Today’s news mark the most relevant update fans of the series created by Hwang Dong-hyuk have received in a long time. Other than stating that the new episodes will be coming to the platform’s catalog later this year, a more precise release window wasn’t provided by the studio at this time.

The first season of Squid Game followed Gi-hun as he struggled to make ends meet, with his financial situation affecting every aspect of his personal life and self-esteem. But when the protagonist is provided with the opportunity of participating in a competition with plenty of money involved, Gi-hun looks to turn his life around with the prize. However, after meeting participants such as Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo) and Kang Sae-byeok (Hoyeon), he realizes that the entire competition is organized to observe how people kill each other for the money, instead of the Squid Game allowing the participants to use their intelligence and athletic skill to win.

Squid Game turned out to be a massive hit for Netflix, reportedly becoming the platform’s most popular title of all time upon release, with approximately 1.65 billion hours watched on television screens from all over the world. While Hwang Dong-hyuk was busy with the development of this year’s second season, Netflix worked to bring a reality titled Squid Game: The Challenge to life. Even if it was surrounded by a bit of controversy, the competition series also proved to be a hit for the streaming platform. It remains to be seen if the new episodes will also be successful for Netflix.

What Will Happen in ‘Squid Game’ Season 2?

The premise for the second season of Squid Game remains under wraps, but taking a look at how the first installment concluded could hint towards where the plot might be heading next. Just as Gi-hun was about to fly to Los Angeles to reconnect with his daughter, he noticed a stranger being recruited for the competition in the same way he was, some time before. When he called the number given to the stranger, Gi-hun was warned to stay away from whoever might be organizing the games again. The lead of the series hung up the phone before deciding he was going to solve the mystery before heading to Los Angeles. Wi Ha-joon and Lee Byung-hun are also set to reprise their roles in upcoming episodes of the series.

The second season of Squid Game currently doesn’t have a release date. Stay tuned at Collider for more updates.
