Kit Harington has set his eyes on a TV thriller with the working title, Empire of Dirt, as his next venture, Deadline reports. The series is being described as “very British Western,” while the Game of Thrones alum will produce it alongside Top Boy writer Daniel West, the cast is undecided yet, with still hopes that he could play the lead.
The Western will follow Jake, a hotshot from the big city who returns home to his family farm in the Lake District after 15 years for a cousin’s wedding. Things take a turn when following a tragic accident, he finds himself the unwilling head of his family. In time, he discovers that his father had been running a multimillion-pound drugs racket from his family land.
“Ancient Traditions will Collide” with Modern Mindset in ‘Empire of the Dirt’
Describing the eight part series, Harington and West said the show is a “very British Western, set against the Lake District’s stunning visual backdrop.” Further teasing, “The Galloways are a family fighting to survive, wrestling with their identity, trauma and the burden of inheritance, as ancient traditions collide with the mores of modern Britain.” New Pictures CEO Willow Grylls said the show is “thrilling, dangerous and fun, but always with a searing emotional core.
The premise sounds extremely interesting, and the family dynamic reminds one of the best Western around, Yellowstone, which is loved for its representation of the era as well as the complex relationship the family shares. A British Western is always welcomed by fans and if Harington decides to lead, it will be a refreshing sight to behold after seeing him surrounded by the snow for nearly a decade by fans in his breakout role as Jon Snow.
Harington previously collaborated with West on BBC’s hit historical drama miniseries, Gunpowder. The series was led by Harington and counted West as EP. The series has an 82 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and was well-received by fans and critics alike. Given the success of their previous venture, Empire of Dirt seems like another show that will keep fans glued to the seats. Harington recently wrapped the shoot of director Yaniv Raz’s Eternal Return, where he stars alongside Naomi Scott, Sonoya Mizuno, Simon Callow and more. West has credits like Morning After, The Bill, South Riding and more.
No release date or window has been announced for Empire of Dirt. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
